Important Tips to crack the "Speaking Test" at IELTS

The most feared test of IELTS is Speaking Test. Though it is highly interactive in nature yet it needs lot of precautions and uniqueness.
This section is a unique one due to following reasons:
  1. The test is very interactive.

    b. The test is related to real life situations.

    c.         It is conducted by a certified examiner whose tone of voice may be different from yours.

    d.         It is recorded.

    e.         It is aimed to assess various skills such as general awareness, ability to speak, ability to express  and organization of ideas, to discuss and speculate issues to check the fluency and correctness of language.

    Time Duration: 
The time allowed for this test is 15 minutes. It is divided into three parts such as:

 Part 1 – Introduction and interview

Candidate is asked to introduce by the examiner and approximately 4 to 5 minutes are given to answer general questions about his/her family and other personal information.

 Part 2 – Individual long discussions

Candidates are given a task card which contains the topic on which they have to speak. For this task generally 4 minutes are allowed and one has to prepare and speak about the topic flawlessly.

 Part 3 – Two way discussion

Once you have answered the questions the examiner asks more questions related to part 2. It is framed to check the expression by asking the opinion about the same in the most expressive manner.

How marking and assessment is done for IELTS speaking section?

Marking and assessment of the speaking abilities are done on the basis of four main points these are:
  1. Speech Fluency and consistency of thoughts
  2. Grammar and vocabulary is expected high to check the proficiency in language 
  3. Pronunciation is checked for accent proficiency.
  4. Lexical resource

  6. Always answer in full or complete sentences. One word answers are not accepted and not given any weight age in awarding final grades.
  7. There is no need to imitate any western accent. Speak clearly with proper expression to be able to speak comfortably. Practice a lot in spoken English exercises few days before the exam.
  8. Use technical words rather than monotonous words give a good impression about the extent of knowledge you have about words and its usage.
  9. Speak fluently and do not mumble. Say only those words of which you are confident and you can pronounce it fluently.
  10. Avoid using slangs rather project your best knowledge about the basic and advanced usage of words and language. Slangs will leave a negative impression about your abilities.
  11. Try to give answer in your own words and opinion rather than using somebody else version of the topic given to you. Keep a proper track of the topic while speaking about so that your attention is not diverted. It will give a positive approach towards the topic in discussion and your mind will stimulate good and original ideas.
